Liam Gifford

Theatre I Community Engagement I Education

Liam is a theatre-maker, qualified teacher and engagement professional specialising in leading community projects, directing plays and devising new work with and for experienced and non-experienced theatre-makers of all ages and backgrounds.

Having initially trained at Dartington College of Arts where he gained a BA Hons. Theatre degree, Liam later achieved his PGCE qualified teacher status in Drama at Aberystwyth University. After 6 years as a secondary school teacher and subject lead, Liam moved into the community engagement and education area of professional theatres, as well as additional roles within the wider sector. This has seen him work for Nuffield Southampton Theatres, ZoieLogic Dance Theatre, Mayflower Theatre, Birmingham 2022/FABRIC, Theatre Royal Winchester and Hat Fair.

Liam has a wealth of performance experience as director, performer, dramaturg and producer with his work presented at festivals and venues across the UK. His specialism is in creating new work with others, which has included  R&D residencies at such venues as Theatre Royal Bath; festival performances including at the inaugural BE Festival in Birmingham; and works presented at mid-scale venues including Nuffield Southampton Theatres. Internationally, Liam and his first group - Openbatch Theatre - were
 invited to perform at the Neu/Now festival in Vilnius, Lithuania after their piece was judged to be the best theatre piece by graduates in Europe. He has been the founding member of three theatre companies in the South West, creating work in response to key social issues and performing new writing by young playwrights. 

Although his specialism is in devised theatre, Liam regularly leads workshops in all aspects of theatre and performance including acting, community engagement, design, directing, dramaturgy, performances in non-traditional spaces, producing, physical theatre, stage combat, story creation, theatre history and use of voice. 

 

Liam has trained under such leading practitioners as Company Three, Tim Etchells (Forced Entertainment), Ned Bennett, Punchdrunk, Baktruppen, Mike Shepperd (Kneehigh), Without Walls/XTRAX, Simon Murray, Bill Mitchell (Kneehigh and Wildworks) and Spymonkey among others.
